Fade to Black - Metallica

Life it seems, will fade away
Drifting further everyday
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

Things not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly loss this can't be real
Can't stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now he's gone

No one but me can save myself, but it's too late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try

Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye

I am currently listening to this song by Metallica. I always liked the lyrics and the way James sang the words on this song. While not being the fast Metallica we knew back then, this song is full of emotions. The guitar (including bass guitar) and drum works are simply put beautiful.

The song starts with a solo. Damn I love solos. And then there is a picking part which is very melodic. As James start singing the verse, the tone of the song is set. The song is, for those who don't know already, about suicide. In the first verse, James says a lot about how confused he is. He also accepts that the end is near and expresses his feelings about how he lost the will to live. Some sources say that this song was written after James' equipments were stolen. And these dark lyrics really shows the way he feels.

The strange thing about this song is that the pre-chorus has no lyrics. It's just a guitar riff. The second verse goes off about how empty he is and how things are different. He can neither take nor believe what is happening. He also narrates how he cannot take this emptiness and says "he's gone" which to me refers to his amp. Then the second pre-chorus kicks in followed by the chorus.

The chorus lyrics are very well written. That's what Metallica was popular for, they say. They had intelligent lyrics. He admits that he only can change his fate, but its too late. He is also so deep in this paranoia that he cant even think why he should try changing things. Indeed he says how yesterday seems to never have existed and the last line straight forward "Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye".

The song goes off for 2 more minutes, with an awesome riff that I really love at 4:50. The song goes on to another riff. The kind of riff that was perfect to solo over. And Kirk does an amazing job out of it. Reminds me I gotta learn that song. Cheers dudes. The song is still playing on my laptop btw. Byeeeeeeeeeeeeee...
